On 24th September 2020, the European Commission has adopted a Digital Finance Package that will boost Europe’s competitiveness and innovation in the financial sector, give consumers more choice and opportunities in financial services, while at the same time ensuring their protection as well as financial stability.
In particular, the Package includes (i) a Digital Finance Strategy, aimed at creating a European financial data space, new ways of channelling funding to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMES), better financial products for consumers and, (ii) new provisions on crypto-assets, distinguishing between crypto-assets already governed by EU legislation and subjected to a pilot regime by virtue of the legislative proposal and those unregulated, for which the Commission proposes a besboke regime, with more stringent requirements in terms of capital, supervision and investor rights.
